Campus Central - University of Stirling - 2023 RIAS Award Winner

The design of the Campus Central project by Page Park architects has been given a 2023 Building of the Year award by The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). The project involved the refurbishment of the existing Atrium as well as the construction of a new three-storey building at the heart of the campus, providing students and staff with a host of new study and social spaces.

Natural ventilation, using double-glazed louvres to complement the natural lighting effect, was seen as a sustainable approach to maintaining a comfortable environment.

The design, by Page Park architects, specified FIEGER FLW 32 glass louvre vents to provide both general ventilation and emergency smoke control. Working closely with the façade contractor, Marshall Brown Ltd, a total of 17 no. FIEGER FLW 32_17 SmoTec louvre windows were supplied, each comprising Guardian SunGuard SN 70/35 solar control double-glazing.

To meet the architect’s specific requirements and to comply with The Scottish Building Regulations, the vents had a bespoke design comprising 200 mm high louvre blades up to 1100 mm, with stainless steel security bars, and larger louvre blades above.
The vents were supplied complete with Gröninger ML 1500 24V DC actuators, fitted to the side-frames. This motor was selected due to its safety feature of being programmable for anti-trapping, as well as the built-in auxiliary contacts, which meant it could be easily connected to the Building Management System.

To facilitate installation into the curtain walling, the vents were manufactured with integral 17 x 32 mm glazing adapters.

All of the units were finished in a Tiger Drylac anodized effect finish (068/60307 C33) to match the surrounding facade framework.

A key characteristic of the vents is the energy efficient design, achieved by the class-leading low air leakage rate, together with low U-values.

FIEGER units are tested across a wide range of standards, including EN 12101-2 for natural smoke vents and BS 6180: 2011 Barrier loading
