King’s Park Secondary School is a six-year non-denominational school on the south side of Glasgow with just under 900 pupils. It first opened in 1962 and in 2000 was part of a PPP/PFI initiative, which saw all of Glasgow City Council’s secondary school estate either rebuilt or refurbished.

The current phase of the schools’ development is being carried out via the Life-Cycle funding, which is released as part of the ongoing concession period of the project. which included looking at ways in which the schools can improve their efficiency and save energy.

A recent example at King’s Park Secondary School is a project to improve the lighting in the school’s dining room, assembly hall and toilet facilities.

Galliford Try (as part of the Amey/Galliford Try JV) acting as the main contractor for Life-Cycle; approached electrical distributor Edmundson with a view to propose a lighting design that would offer increased product longevity and energy efficiency.

The design developed by NVC’s specialist team included a range of NVC Lighting’s fittings including Oregon IK09, IP20 rated industrial luminaires, Yale IK10, IP40 rated robust surface mount LED luminaires, Sterling IP44, TP(a) rated, edge lit LED recessed modular panels and Spartan a robust IK10, IP65 rated LED circular bulkhead suitable for use indoors or outdoors, all of which were installed by local building services contractor Primext FM & Small Works Ltd.

They were able to meet the of requirement of the Tp(a) specification of Part B of the Building Regulations with our Sterling LED panel, which provides the optimum safety for thermo plastics where in the event of exposure to fire it self-extinguishes in less than 5 secs.

This solution not only met the school’s sustainability requirements but also provided the higher IP rating specified by CIBSE guidance for the toilet areas and overcame the challenges presented by the assembly and dining halls’ pitched ceilings.
