To enhance its comprehensive balustrade design support package, Sapphire Balustrades has evolved SES (Structural Evaluation System), a unique software tool to produce accurate structural calculations for balustrades from the core systems and 'bespoke' variations offered in the Sapphire portfolio. Using SES, Sapphires design team can provide architects and specifiers with the data they may need to ensure each individual balustrade or handrail project meets relevant standards and regulations. SES can be used to provide client peace of mind or for Building Control approval. SES provides the scope to produce calculations for specific designs for all project applications, from residential balconies to commercial balustrades, and from retail projects to care homes.
Sapphires SES tool eases the structural design of balustrades, and is based on extensive testing of Sapphires balustrade ranges for a spectrum of differing applications. SES evaluates the structural capability of balustrade designs for specific locations, including level balconies and raked stairwells or access ramps, and enables design modifications to be made to ensure compliance, and SES can be re-run for confirmation. Design modifications suggested can range from changing the type or size of baluster fixings to amending the glazing specification for balustrades featuring Sapphires Crystal structural glass system or Onyx stainless steel tubular system with glass infill panels.
Nick Haughton, Marketing Manager at Sapphire Balustrades, says SES is just part of the comprehensive service and support provided by Sapphire to balustrade designers. He comments: We aspire to assist the specifier to enjoy optimum freedom in selecting the overall design, and the greatest choice in materials and details. At the same time we advise how to ensure that handrails, balusters and infills are structurally competent and fit-for-purpose. With SES we can quickly evaluate whether an individual balustrade design will achieve BS design loads or advise the designer of what needs to be enhanced.
In addition to SES Sapphire also looks to support the specifier with a new Technical Manual, plus free-to-download CAD details and NBS specification clauses. All of which can be fused together with Sapphires RIBA approved CPD presentation. For more information visit www.sapphirebalustrades.com.
