At Knauf Insulation, their Technical Support Team is often asked whether Mineral Wool insulation can be safely stored outside in-branch or on-site.
Thanks to Knauf’s three-part packaging system, the answer is often yes.
While it’s always preferable for products to be stored under cover, they can be stored outdoors if they are kept in the original wrapped pallets – or ‘Supakubes’. This is because Knauf’s products on these wrapped pallets are protected by three layers of packaging, each of which serves an important function:
• The first layer is the individual wrap. This maintains the shape and size of the roll, making It easier to handle on site, and includes the product labels with important information for customers.
• The second is the multipack wrap, which acts as a sleeve to hold several rolls or packs of slabs of insulation together. These first two layers are also how they compress the insulation, so they can fit more product per pack and more packs per pallet, making storage more efficient and reducing lorry movements.
• The top layer is the main or hood wrap, which covers the whole pallet. It’s this final layer that creates the primary barrier against the elements.
When storing outdoors, it’s always best to keep products on the original pallet, protected by the waterproof hood wrap. This also makes them easier to transport in bulk.
Once pallets are opened, Knauf recommend keeping products indoors.
By following this simple guidance, you can ensure that your Mineral Wool will perform as designed when it is correctly installed.
